Everglade Snail Kite Facts
Range: Can be found in central to southern Florida, Cuba and
northwest Honduras. Other subspecies can be found in regions of Central and
South America.
Family: Member of the hawk family
Dimensions: 16-18 inches long; wingspan is about 45 inches
Food: Apple snails
Habitat: Usually nest in trees in low-lying marshes near
shallow water or edge of lakes
Appearance: Males are slate gray with black head and wing tips,
a white patch at the base of a square tail and red legs. Females' bodies are
heavily streaked with dark lines and a white line above the eye and a white
tail patch. Both have curved beaks and yellow legs. Juveniles have brown eyes.
Adults have red eyes.
Other facts: Added to the endangered species list in 1967. Less
than 1,000 left in Florida.
