July 2010

Hello Everybody!

Our Refuge has been getting some great publicity recently. The PARKLANDER MAGAZINE has a feature article on "Loxahatchee - A Great Place to Learn About the Everglades;" and the ART & CULTURE MAGAZINE of PBC calls Loxahatchee ("The Wild Side") one of six great places to visit in the County.

A hearty welcome to the seven students who are working full time at the Refuge this summer. In the SHS/YCC program we have Bryant Garcia, Cabot Zucker, Yasmin Hernandez, and Darlain Presmy; and in the STEP college intern program we have Corey Clawson, Christine Trammell, and Christina Westgate.

Sunday, July 18th, 2 PM in our Visitor Center Theatre we will be hosting author/photographer Joel M. Curzon who will present photographic images from his award winning book, Light Fading - Reflections on the Imperiled Everglades, and lead a discussion on the continuing threats to our precious ecosystem and what responses are needed. Joel will remain afterwards to personally autograph copies of the book. Profits from the sales will go to the NWRA Gulf Oil Disaster Relief Fund to assist coastal Wildlife Refuges in their response to the ongoing crisis. Please try to attend this special event - I promise you an afternoon that will be stirring and memorable.

See you around and about.
Steve
